About Us
History
Our story starts in a refugee camp in Thailand, where Mary was born.
The Maryneth Kem Jones Youth Foundation was established to honor and celebrate Mary’s remarkable legacy and passion for education and the arts. Mary was more than just a teacher – she was a force of nature, a beacon of light, and an inspiration to all who knew her. Born in a refugee camp in Thailand in 1987, Mary and her family fled war-torn Cambodia before settling in Seattle, Washington. Between coming from an immigrant family, and having an innate curiosity for learning, Mary dedicated her life to empowering others to reach their full potential and discover the joy of education.
Mary pursued her studies in early childhood education at the University of Washington. Upon graduation, Mary embarked on a career as an elementary and preschool teacher. With boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm, Maryneth touched the lives of countless children, adults and educators. Mary’s enthusiasm for teaching extended beyond academics; she embraced the arts as a means of fostering creativity and self-expression. Mary was a passionate advocate for early childhood education, believing wholeheartedly in its power to shape the future. She firmly believed that learning should be fun and that every child deserves the opportunity to explore, discover, and grow in a safe and inclusive environment.
Tragically, Mary’s life was cut short in 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to children’s education. In her memory, the Maryneth Kem Jones Youth Foundation was created to continue her work and celebrate her extraordinary life.
MKJYF has a dual focus on early childhood education and the arts. It operates in Washington State, with a mission to provide opportunities for children to learn and express themselves in a safe and inclusive environment. The foundation prioritizes accessibility and fun in education, believing that joyful learning experiences are essential for children’s development.
One of the primary objectives of the foundation is to offer scholarships to underprivileged youth, enabling them to access quality education and participate in artistic endeavors. Additionally, the foundation supports teachers in underserved areas by providing resources and supplies, recognizing their crucial role in shaping young minds.
Overall, MKJYF aims to break down barriers to education and creativity, ensuring that every child in Washington State has the opportunity to thrive academically and artistically. By fostering a community where learning is celebrated and supported, the foundation strives to create a brighter and more equitable future for all children.
